At Djanogly the English curriculum is based around literature.

We believe that reading a wide range of texts not only improves our students' performance in the English Literature exam, but also develops their skills as writers, and broadens their horizons and perspectives, making them better citizens and future leaders.​

The choice of texts across the two key stages allows students to read a wide range of texts: from across the centuries and from different cultures.

Pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually as they explore the texts, which have been chosen so that they link thematically and give students the opportunity to compare and contrast different perspectives and viewpoints – an important skill in the exam, but also in the real world. ​

We are aware that many students, for a variety of reasons, struggle to read.

To address this, in addition to their English lessons, students also follow the ‘Accelerated Reader’ programme which assigns texts of an appropriate level and is designed to maximise progress in reading. In the two years since we have been using this programme, we have seen massive progress in the reading ages of many students, which has led to improved progress across the curriculum.

Key Stage 3

In years 7 & 8 pupils are encouraged to develop an appreciation and love of reading, and read increasingly challenging material independently through:

  • reading a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, including in particular whole books, short stories, poems and plays with a wide coverage of genres, historical periods, forms and authors
  • choosing and reading books independently for challenge, interest, and enjoyment as well as critically evaluate and report on these in class
  • re-reading books encountered earlier to increase familiarity with them and provide a basis for making comparisons.

Pupils will develop their writing to increase their accuracy, fluency, and ability to develop written discussion through:

  • writing for a wide range of purposes and audiences
  • plan, draft, edit and proof-read a range of texts and source materials
  • consolidating and building on their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary

Key Stage 4

At Key stage 4 pupils continue their studies as part of their compulsory core curriculum and study GCSE level courses in English language and literature in most cases.

Students enhance their written abilities as well as their reading, comprehension and speaking and listening skills to help prepare for examination and complete controlled assessment tasks.
